Florencia was feeling blue because she had an argument with her best friend Michaela. All the fight began for just white elephants, the day before Florencia´s fifteen party, a red letter day for her. They couldn’t stay together for more than a minute, and they put each other in their own black list.

A few hours before the party was ending, Michaela show to Florencia her apologies in black and white by a letter. At first her friend was a little yellow streak, but then she admitted that she have done a mistake too.

Niigata earthquake
The Niigata earthquake of June 16, 1964 had a magnitude of 7.5 and caused severe damage to many structures in Niigata. The destruction was observed to be largely limited to buildings that were founded on top of loose, saturated soil deposits. Even though about 2000 houses were totally destroyed, only 28 lives were lost (General report on the Niigata earthquake 1964). A tsunami, triggered by movement of the sea floor associated with the fault rupture, totally destroyed the port of Niigata.

The death toll of this earthquake was over 200. The Niigata earthquake has been extensively studied by Japanese seismologists, and in particular, by Keiiti Aki who introduced the concept of seismic moment, estimated its value for the Niigata earthquake based on spectral analysis of its seismic waves, and discussed the significance of seismic moment as a source parameter. This earthquake archive is created to honor Prof. Keiiti Aki for his many pioneering contributions in seismology.
Liquefaction The Niigata earthquake, together with the Alaska earthquake also of 1964, brought liquefaction phenomena and their devastating effects to the attention of engineers and seismologists. A remarkable ground failure occurred near the Shinano river bank where the Kawagishi-cho apartment buildings suffered bearing capacity failures and tilted severely (left). Despite the extreme tilting, the buildings themselves suffered remarkably little structural damage.

Sand boils and ground fissures were observed at various sites in Niigata. Lateral spreading caused the foundations of the Showa bridge to move laterally so much that the simply supported spans became unseated and collapsed

On 16 July 2007, a strong earthquake struck northwestern Japan, causing a fire and minorradioactive water leak at one of the world's most powerful nuclear power plants. At least seven people were killed and hundreds injured. Japan's Meteorological Agency measured the quake at 6.8 on the richter scale and sending aftershocks of 6.6. The U.S. Geological Survey, which monitors quakes around the world, said the initial quake registered 6.7. A tsunami watch was issued along the Sea of Japan. The predicted height of the tsunami was estimated to be 50 cm (20 inches). That earthquake sparked only a few small tsunamis, growing to be no more than about 20 cm (8 inches) tall. However, the 1964 quake and tsunami north of the current one destroyed the port of the city of Niigata

Natural Disasters

The Challenger Accident

The disaster happened in the 1968, when the American space shuttle, Challenger, has exploded killing all seven astronauts on board. They were five men and two women - including the first teacher in space - were just over a minute into their flight from Cape Canaveral in Florida when the Challenger blew up. The astronauts' families, at the airbase, and millions of Americans witnessed the world's worst space disaster live on TV.
The danger from falling in an unknown place prevented rescue boats reaching the scene for more than an hour.
President Ronald Reagan has described the tragedy as "a national loss".
The Challenger's flight, the 25th by a shuttle, had already been delayed because of bad weather. High winds, then icicles caused the launch to be postponed from 22 January.

EXTRAS:
In 25 years of space exploration seven people have died - today that total has been doubled.
The shuttle crew was led by Commander Dick Scobee, 46. Christa McAuliffe, 37, married with two children, was to be the first school teacher in space - picked from among 10,000 entries for a competition.

THE HURRICANE “DEAN”.

Hurricane Dean could become a Category Five hurricane later today before hitting Mexico, the US National Hurricane Centre said on Monday. The hurricane is expected to hit Mexico's Yucatan peninsula after having battered Jamaica's southern coast during a Caribbean rampage that has killed at least nine people.
Dean is currently an "extremely dangerous" Category Four hurricane, the second highest on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale.
According to the hurricane centre, Dean is travelling at 33 kilometres per hour and carrying sustained winds of 240 km/h. The storm has passed more than 160 km to the south of the Cayman Islands – a British territory in the western Caribbean.
Jamaican authorities said 300,000 people were displaced by the storm, and at least one man was missing. Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller has declared a month-long state of emergency.

EARTHQUAKE IN PERU
The 8.0 magnitude quake that struck the coast of Peru on August 15 killed at least 500 people and left tens of thousands homeless. In a vast disaster area surrounding the cities of Pisco and Ica, the survivors, many of them living on the streets, are now desperately waiting for help. Over 34,000 houses were destroyed by the quake and several powerful aftershocks. The damage to the infrastructure is so severe that many relief efforts are hampered and remote mountain communities are cut off from assistance. The quake struck about 600km south-east of the Peruvian capital Lima at 1533 local time (2033 GMT) Chile and Bolivia also felt the earthquake. In northern Chile, 30 people were injured, four of them seriously.

Operations have also been hampered by a series of aftershocks, with many people worried about returning to their houses. Peru was battered by a strong 7.7 magnitude tremor in 1970 that killed approximately 70,000 people.

Did you know...

The Kingdom of Araucania and Patagonia (also called New France) was a self-proclaimed independent state founded by a French lawyer and adventurer named Orelie-Antoine de Tounens in southern South America in the mid 19th century. At the time the local indigenous Mapuche population were engaged in a desperate armed struggle to retain their independence in the face of hostile military and economic encroachment by the governments Chile and Argentina, who p;coveted the Mapuche lands for their agricultural potential.

While visiting the region in 1860, Orelie-Antoine came to sympathise with the Mapuche cause, and a group of loncos (Mapuche tribal leaders) in turn elected him to the position of King—possibly in the belief that their cause might be better served with a European acting on their behalf. Orelie-Antoine then set about establishing a government, created a blue, white and green flag, and had coins minted for the nation under the name of Nouvelle France.

His efforts at securing international recognition for the Mapuche were thwarted by the Chilean and Argentinian governments, who captured, imprisoned and then deported him on several occasions. The supposed founding of the Kingdom of Araucania and Patagonia led to the approval of the Occupation of the Araucanía by Chilean forces. Chilean president José Joaquín Pérez authorized Cornelio Saavedra Rodríguez, commander the Chilean troops invading Araucanía to capture Orélie-Antoine. He did not receive further punishment because he was deemed to be insane by both Chilean and Argentinean authorities and sent to a madhouse in Chile. King Orelie-Antoine I eventually died penniless in France in 1878 after years of fruitless struggle to regain his perceived legitimate authority over his conquered kingdom.

The first Araucanian king's present-day successor, Prince Felipe, lives in France and has renounced his predecessor's claims to the Kingdom, but he has kept alive the memory of Orelie-Antoine, and lent continued support to the ongoing struggle for Mapuche self-determination by authorising the minting of forty or so coins in cupronickel, silver, gold, and palladium since 1988.

Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Alan Poe, was a writer who wrote a lot of horror stories. For example, The Tell Tale Heart, The Raven, The Cask of Amontillado, etc.
This man was an American, who was born on January 19, 1809 and died on October 7 1849.
His father died after he was born, and his mother left him when he was a kid.
The man who adopted him was called John Allan who lived with Edgar.A.P and his wife in The United Kingdom. He got married with a woman, who died soon. After that he got married again but now with his cousin. He enrolled in the USA army, but he left it because he was alcoholic.
He wrote stories for many different magazines.

He wrote all his stories with things in common, like the place where the main character hid the body or the person who he killed(The Cask o Amontillado-The Cat). His style of writing was very depressing (for me Agos) and very good (for Simon). In his stories he used to include some events that had happened in his own life.
His stories were of horror because his life was not a good one, he probably needed some help to get over his dark feelings.

STORIES OF ALLAN POE:
THE TELL TALE HEART:
This story is about a man who was crazy. And he wanted to kill an old man because he hated his eye. And everyday he went to the room of the old man and saw his eye. Finally he killed him , cut him into pieces and hid him under the floor. Then he confesses after hearing the beat of the old man´s heart inside his head.

THE CASK OF AMONTILLADO:
This story is about a man who insults another man and the man who was insulted takes revenge and ends killing him. One puts the other between two walls and burying him alive.

We have different opinions on the project but we try to do our best!!!!!

Thanks

Agostina and Simon
Edgar Allan Poe.

After working with Poe in the social studies class, we have to analise the way that he wrote his stories and his life.
We have read : The tell-tale Heart, The Cask of Amontillado, The Black Cat and The Raven. We noticed in all of his stories that he used the same style to write them. In the stories always happened something bad to a person. He wrote the stories in arabesque genre, which is a dark horror writing style.
We really liked all the stories. We think that he wrote in that way to express his feelings.
The Tell-Tale Heart is about a man who killed another one because of his fake eye. He killed him and put him under the ground. Then when the police came to his house he thought that the heart was beating and he became crazy. In “The Raven” a man lost his soul because a raven, representing Death took it away. In the Cask of Amontillado, a man put his friend between two walls because he insulted him. In the Black Cat a man killed a woman and put her between two walls with a black cat. A few years later they open the two walls and they found the black cat which had eaten woman’s brain
That´s all Folks!!! we hope you´ve liked it.

POE'S WORK

Edgar Allan Poe:
The Raven, The Tell Tale Heart and The Cask of Amontillado
In this report we are going to talk about some great pieces of arabesque writing of the xix century, by Edgar Allan Poe.
The writer, Edgar Allan Poe, was born on January19,1809 in England. He was adopted because his mother and father died when he was just 2 years old.
Then, Frances family adopted him .He didn’t have a very good life because he always had alcohol problems, but his adopted family was always there to help.
He left the university because he had money problems with other students but that didn’t stop him and he kept on writing on his own. He could work in some important newspapers and there he could publish his best horror stories which then would be very famous. He also wrote some poems but in his same arabesque form.
THE RAVEN: this story is about a man who was a little bit crazy about the lost of his love, Lenore, and he couldn’t rest in peace for that. Then a black and horrible raven appeared in his room and started croaking “nevermore” when he asked about his lover destiny. And also in the same room, the poor man could feel the death which didn’t want to take his soul away.

We liked Edgar’s literature because in its own way, it was unique and it could catch our attention, because his horror style is very interesting.

Poe

We will talk about Poe’s life and his stories; where and when he was born, his wives, and the main topics of his life. About his stories we will talk about the “The Tell-Tale Heart”, “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Raven”.
Edgar Alan Poe was born in Boston, January 19,1809. He also lived in Scotland, London, Chelsea, Virginia and many other places. He started to write poetry in April 1827. Some important people in Poe’s life were: Elizabeth his mother, Arnold Poe his father, Virginia (first wife), Sarah Whitman (second wife), Allen John (step father).
He became alcoholic and it was one of the biggest problems he had. One version of his death is that he died in the street drinking.
The “Tell-Tale Heart” is about a man who served an old gentleman in his home, and that old man had a vulture eye. The servant hated his eye, and one day he decided to kill him. In the end the police arrested him, but it was something uncommon. The police didn’t believe the confession, because he said that he could hear the beat of the heart of the dead man from under the floor.
We think that this stories are interesting and of horror. We recommend it if you like this type of stories.

The man in the Town

The man in the town
One day a man was walking in the street when he found a map of a house.
So he decided to go to this house. There he saw two women killing another man. When the man was getting close to the women he was also killed.
The next day another man found the same map and went to the same house. When the man saw the two women they were eating human meat. So the man took a gun and shot. The women died and they never killed another person again.
The following week, this brave man shot a woman, he got insane and killed five people in a bomb explosion near the house……..

Our Headmistress

OUR HEADMISTRESS

Ms. Carlota Gamarra is a graduate teacher and teacher trainer with more than 35 years of experience in the teaching of English.
Throughout her career she has always been interested in furthering her development as a teacher. During her stay in England - from 1972 to 1974 she attended several courses on Literature, Linguistics, Language and Methodology, both, at Nottingham University and Clarendon College. Since then, she has travelled extensively to many English speaking countries - mainly to England - for different kinds of courses.

She strongly believes that teachers should always be ready to nurture their teaching skills and gain further insight on the processes of learning. Therefore, for the last 9 years she has been running in-service courses on different topics relevant to the teaching profession as well as preparing teachers to sit for the CEELT I & CEELT II and COTE exams (Cambridge Examinations for Teachers).
